Petr Cech was at his imperious best for Arsenal in their recent Champions League game against Bayern Munich.
The gunners needed a huge lifeline in order to have any hope of qualifying for the knockout stages. This was after two consecutive opening defeats in the group stages. However, not many gave them any hope of beating Bayern Munich, who were seen as a major favourite for the title itself. Arsenal produced a stunning performance – in front of their own supporters – to get a 2-0 win. This puts them back in contention for a qualification spot.
The victory was largely possible due to the brilliance ofCech, who made many crucial saves in the 90 minutes. The former Chelsea goalkeeper especially recalled the saving he made to keep out striker Robert Lewandowski, who has been in brilliant form of late. The Polish international had scored an astonishing 22 goals in his last 16 games.Cech has been criticised for some high-profile mistakes in the domestic competitions, but he showed that he was completely worth every bit of the £ 11 million Arsenal paid to Chelsea in the summer.Cech is now hoping to inspire Arsenal to yet another victory in their next Champions League game.
Arsenal travel to the Allianz Arena to take on Bayern in the next European game. “Everybody was doing his bit and I tried to do mine. Whenever they managed to get through our defensive block, I was there in the right spot to help my team-mates and I’m very glad with the turning point in the second-half when I saved the one v one with Lewandowski and a few minutes later we scored. That was probably the decisive moment of the game. The whole team has been absolutely brilliant,” said Cech, who was dropped for the previous Champions League outing.
